Chapter Six

Maya

"Pride and Prejudice is not your favorite book," I say, splashing water in Kane's direction. He's lounging at the opposite end of his ridiculously large bathtub, his arms thrown over the sides like an indolent king. He looks edible with a cocky smirk on his face and bubbles sliding down his chest.

We've been in here so long the water is turning my fingers and toes pruney, but neither of us are in a hurry to get out. He was worried he was too rough with me, but I loved every second of being with him. He's bossy though. I wanted to do it again, but he smacked me on the ass and demanded I soak in the tub for a little while.

It didn't take much work to convince him to get in with me. We've been talking for the last hour and a half about everything under the sun. His favorite color is silver, he hates police procedurals but loves Dr. Who. He wanted to be an astronaut when he grew up. His sister is fifteen years younger than he is, but they're the best of friends. He's allergic to cats, hates snakes, but thinks spiders are useful. In short, he's perfectly insane and insanely perfect.

"You're right," he says, grinning at me. "It's not my favorite. I preferred Emma."

I roll my eyes at him, convinced he's just teasing me since I confessed how much I love Jane Austen. I've read her entire catalog more times than I care to admit to this crazy man. I love that he knows her books though. Most men turn their noses up at Jane Austen. Not Kane. He's actually read most of them.

"I'm serious, lamb," he says. "Emma is a spoiled society brat who believes that some people are simply better than others because of their station in life. But she learns that where society places you has little to do with your worth and character. People are people, regardless of what family they're born into."

I gape at him, caught off-guard by his summary. It's correct on all points.

"It's the same nature vs nurture discussion we've been having for years," he says, reaching for my foot. He digs his fingers into the arch, making me moan quietly. "Austen challenged a lot of preconceived notions with Emma."

"What do you think?" I ask, genuinely curious where he falls in the debate. "Are some people born bad?"

"No," he says. "I think we're all born selfish and self-serving and hedonistic. It's who we are at our core. We're shaped by a lot of shit along the way, but we're all born with the same biological imperatives, the same overarching need to look out for ourselves. Some people learn to overcome those base instincts and do better. They adapt to society. Others suck no matter what life throws at them."

"Kane Maxwell," I say, gaping at him. "You're a cynic."

"I'm a realist," he disagrees. "Taking care of number one is human nature, lamb. Some of us may be civilized and play by a set of agreed upon rules, but that base instinct still exists in all of us.
